Let Us Go On

Hebrews 5:11-14; 6:10-20

“Ye are dull of hearing” (Hebrews 5:11). Such dullness of hearing is a self-inflicted condition, brought on by poor choices. This dullness is actually talking about mental and spiritual laziness. Dull here translates a Greek word used only one other time in the New Testament: Hebrews 6:12.

After this much time, you should have advanced to being teachers (Hebrews 5:12). Instead, someone else needs to start at Square One with you. Because of your dullness of hearing, you have actually gone backward in your spiritual development.

You should be skilled in using the Word (Hebrews 5:13). You should be expert swordsmen with the sword of the Spirit. Instead, you’re babies.

Your spiritual senses are underdeveloped, weak, and flaccid (Hebrews 5:14). Your discernment of good and evil is atrophied. Exercise yourselves in godliness!

God neither forgets nor overlooks. He will amply reward love and its good works (Hebrews 6:10). Serving God’s people is showing love for God.

Be faithful right on through to the end (Hebrews 6:11).

Follow and imitate those who receive the reward for their faith and patience (Hebrews 6:12). Like Abraham, for instance (Hebrews 6:13,14). Do not be slothful about these things! Slothful here translates the same Greek word translated dull in Hebrews 5:11.

Quite possibly, you can look at your life and see all manner of failings and imperfections. It isn’t difficult for you to conclude that you are spiritually underdeveloped and immature. You are quite certain that you are still a babe. And now that you have read the last four verses of Hebrews 5, you have no reason to change your opinion of your own spiritual maturity.

Now you are discouraged! When you read the Bible or listen to sermons or read Sunday School lessons, you get a glimpse of the ideal …and you fail to see yourself. Right? Have faith! Take courage! Growth is really quite imperceptible most of the time. God does not do His work in you all in a rush.

“Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). The expression “will perform” is the continuous present tense, indicating a process. Maturity, perfection, and holiness do not happen in us immediately after His Spirit enters us. God does begin His work in us at that point and gradually, daily, surely, He reshapes us into His image. “Now the God of peace…Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ” (Hebrews 13:20,21).

Giving all diligence, add to your faith (2 Peter 1:5)

God’s character rides on His not forgetting the service I render to His people! Just as evil is contrary to Him, so is forgetfulness of the good His people do in love. He is no more likely to forget that good than He is to sin.
