I Know That My Redeemer Lives

Job 19:5-10, 14-27

Even at that stage in history, with the promised Redeemer still hundreds of years from manifesting Himself in the flesh, Job said in simple faith: “I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth” (Job 19:25).

Reminds me of Enoch’s prophecy: “Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints” (Jude 14).

Our Redeemer, the One who was dead, is alive and will come again! While He awaits that grand event, He continues His redeeming, renewing, restoring, reviving work in our hearts so that we are ready to receive Him. “To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints” (1 Thessalonians 3:13).

God blesses us with rewards for faithfulness now. But the “main” reward is yet to come: “For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works” (Matthew 16:27). Let’s hold the faith!

I am amazed at Job’s faith in the resurrection and restoration of the body! Paul held out a similar hope to the church at Philippi (and to you and me!): “Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself” (Philippians 3:21).

Job also believed he would see God with his own eyes. Here are two other pertinent verses:

“As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness” (Psalm 17:15).

“Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8).

Here’s my translation from the Reina-Valera 1960 Spanish Bible of verses 25-27:

I know that my redeemer lives, and at the end he shall lift himself up over the dust;

And after my skin is broken up (cast aside), in my flesh I am to see God;

Whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall see him, and not another, though my heart faints (falters) within me.
