Grade Two Curriculum

Sunrise Reading 200

Second Edition

Build character and develop reading skills using the two readers, Helping Hands and Happy Hearts, both with full-color illustrations. Phonics and other reading mechanics are systematically taught and reviewed. Study skills and oral reading are emphasized. Exercises teach three types of comprehension: literal, inference, and application.

How to Teach the Course

The LightUnit study uses LightUnits 201-205 with Helping Hands and LightUnits 206-210 with Happy Hearts. Students may do some exercises independently. The Teacher’s Guide includes answers and class discussion ideas.

The Worksheets study requires teacher involvement to provide review and prepare students for tests. It is in two booklets containing a total of 64 two-page lessons. Quizzes and tests are sold separately. The Teacher’s Guide contains answers.

Sunrise Bible 200

Second grade Bible contains well-written stories from the Old Testament. They captivate the child’s imagination and bring the Bible to life.

A lesson consists of a two-page spread with a simple Bible story and a corresponding activity such as sequencing events, unlocking a coded message, color-by-number, or simple crossword puzzles.

Whereas first grade LightUnits are mostly activity style, second grade includes more workbook type activities. Without quizzes or tests, this course allows the child to enjoy the Bible and learn its truths without a heavy workload. CLE’s goal is for Bible to be so enjoyable that the students look forward to every class and learn Biblical truths without academic pressure.

How to Teach the Course

Each of the five LightUnits has sixteen lessons, providing two or three Bible lessons a week for a full school term.

The Teacher’s Guide contains the corresponding Bible references, a more detailed version of each story to read aloud, and discussion questions. Reproductions of the student activity pages with answers are also included; thus, answer keys are optional if the Teacher’s Guide is purchased.

Sunrise Language Arts 200

Second Edition

This course completes the phonics program begun in Learning to Read and Language Arts 100. Language Arts 200 integrates grammar, spelling, and penmanship into one easy-to-use course. Students also learn about nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, capitalization, punctuation, and how to identify sentences and phrases. Each LightUnit contains a creative writing assignment.

Each lesson begins with grammar and punctuation skills introduced in small increments. Next is review on material from the previous lesson and some of the material from earlier lessons. A daily penmanship activity is followed by practice on a weekly spelling word list.

How to Teach the Course

Students new to the curriculum should take CLE’s Language Arts Diagnostic Test to ensure correct grade level placement. Teachers should closely monitor LightUnit progress, but students may do some work independently. CLE also offers Extra Practice Sheets for those students needing extra review.

The Teacher’s Guide includes daily lesson plans and student pages with answers. Appendices include alternate LightUnit tests (for students who need to redo a test), a scope and sequence, spelling word lists, and creative writing and penmanship teaching suggestions.

Sunrise Mathematics 200

Math LightUnit 201 reviews concepts that should be adequately mastered in order to succeed in Level 200. It can be used as a diagnostic tool.

The remaining nine LightUnits teach new skills and concepts such as telling time, reading simple graphs, adding/subtracting multi-digit numbers with carrying/borrowing, working with money, basic fraction concepts, and measurement in both the U.S. and metric systems.

Daily review on the addition/subtraction facts from 1-20 ensures mastery. Multiplication is introduced in Math 205, and by the end of the course, students have memorized the tables for 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10. Each lesson contains a realistic story problem or two using a theme (which varies with each LightUnit) such as pets, grandparents, and springtime.

How to Teach the Course

Students new to CLE should take their Math Diagnostic Test to ensure proper grade level placement. You’ll need the Counting Chart and our flash cards for the daily lesson plans.

The Teacher’s Guide provides teaching tips and ideas, extra practice, useful appendices, alternate LightUnit tests, and answers to the LightUnits. Answer keys are optional if the Teacher’s Guide is purchased.
